"What's your skin type?" is a parallel to "What's your ancestry?" While some know for sure, others have a ball park guess and will some it up to "acne-prone." Which isn't wrong, but isn't entirely correct either. Determining your unique skin type is key to finding and creating the perfect routine for your skin's needs.
Let's dive in so you can get started on your skincare journey sooner rather than later!
Normal Skin
little to no breakouts
even glow
few discolorations
overall smooth
Oily Skin
acne-prone
excessive oil production in the t-zone
large pores
feels slick to touch
Dry Skin
prone to redness
flakey patches
tight and dull appearance
may be itchy
Sensitive Skin
easily reactive to products
red areas
may feel itchy
may feel burning sensations
Combination Skin
often oily in the T-zone
often dry cheeks
enlarged pores around the nose
slight breakouts
Hyperpigmentation Skin
many discolorations
age spots
dark spots left after a pimple
sun spots
Finalize your findings with the Blotting Sheet Test.
Blotting Sheet Test: Steps
Wash your face 1 hour before doing the test.
Take a blotting sheet or tissue and tear it into 4 pieces.
Place one piece on your cheeks, forehead, and chin.
normal skin: all 4 pieces stick momentarily, then fall off
oily skin: all 4 pieces stick
dry skin: all 4 pieces fall off
combination skin: 1-2 pieces stick, 1-2 pieces fall off
As you can see, acne-prone skin was not included due to acne having multiple causes, ranging from excessive oil production to sensitivity.
Learning your skin type will help you find products that will heal it, not harm it.
Now it's time to grab the right products just for you!
